Violations of this teaching were attributed to humanlusts. It may be stated at once here that thelandsteward system did not work altogether satisfactorily. The great faults of hischaracter seem to have been want of discrimination in the treatmentof his allies and his retainers, and want of patience in the conductof affairs.
